Yes, the same Stephen King who is better known for his horror classics—a genre he has undoubtedly mastered. Yet, Fairy Tale ventures into another realm: portal fantasy.

This was my first Stephen King novel, and I enjoyed it immensely. The story, told through the lens of a 17-year-old American boy, explores a human tale set in a world that feels both familiar and foreign. The slow build captivated me, and I can see why King is so beloved for his storytelling.

But as my title boldly declares: portal fantasy is the greatest subgenre of fantasy. Perhaps that’s why I found King’s novel so gripping.

What Is Portal Fantasy?

For those unfamiliar with the term, portal fantasy is a subgenre where characters travel through a portal to another plane of existence, typically one vastly different from our own. It’s a concept that opens doors (both literal and metaphorical) to new worlds, blending the familiar with the fantastical.

If you’re new to this genre, this video provides a helpful introduction and recommendations.

Why Portal Fantasy Resonates

My argument that portal fantasy is the greatest subgenre of fantasy is, of course, steeped in subjectivity. Yet, I believe it holds up when examined closely.

Portal fantasy connects our world to another more tightly than traditional high fantasy does. It taps into a universal longing: the hope for a better or more exciting place beyond our current reality. At the same time, these other worlds are often not ideal—they’re fraught with challenges, danger, and complexity.

This duality makes portal fantasy relatable and profound. It mirrors our own journeys of growth and self-discovery through trials and tribulations.

My Love for Visual Interpretations

Like many fans of the genre, my introduction to portal fantasy came through visual adaptations rather than literature. While I haven’t yet read classics like Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland or J.M. Barrie’s Peter and Wendy, I’ve experienced their stories through Disney’s adaptations.

My favorite portal fantasy, however, is Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away, directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Probably one of the greatest animated films created so far. If you've not seen it, well I'm assuming you are reading this article because you either whole heartedly disagree with me, vehemently agree with me or are just plain interested and so therefore for the later group I will give you a brief reason why it's essential viewing pertaining to this topic.

Spirited Away follows Chihiro, a young girl reluctantly moving to a new home. A wrong turn leads her family to an abandoned theme park. Upon stepping through a mysterious tunnel—a portal—they enter a world of strange and magical creatures. Chihiro’s parents, lured by greed, are transformed into pigs. Chihiro is then calmed and helped by a mysterious young man named Haku tells her to save her parents and herself she needs to become a working member of the local guest house. Adventure and growing up fast ensues.

Through exquisite animation and storytelling, the film explores themes overcoming fear and loving those who aren't necessarily good people without expecting anything in return. It looks at how greed can consume you. And once you let go of it, you find peace within yourself and amongst other people.

So even within its setting of fantastical and strange beasts it has, like all good stories, a human element, of good overcoming evil, espeicially the evil within ourselves. The longing to be loved and accepted and that desire being met in self sacrificial relationships. It's a wonderful journey to go on and I hope you have a great ride when you do go on it. Let me know your thoughts.

Familiar Yet Otherworldly

Portal fantasy stands apart from high fantasy because of its grounding in our reality. While high fantasy immerses us in entirely different worlds—places where we can imagine ourselves as dragon riders or orc slayers—portal fantasy offers something more personal. It intertwines the familiar with the fantastical, creating a bridge between the two.

This connection touches something deep within us: the longing for something greater than our current reality. It stirs our innate curiosity about what lies beyond—whether it’s the mysteries of the universe, the depths of the ocean, or the possibility of another world entirely.

Portal fantasy offers hope that there’s something meaningful on the other side of our lived experiences. It reflects our struggles, questions our purpose, and inspires us to imagine a reality beyond our own.

A Few Favorites

Portal fantasy has given us timeless stories like C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia, Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, and Terry Gilliam’s film Time Bandits. While originality isn’t the sole hallmark of the genre, it doesn’t need to be. The beauty of portal fantasy lies in its ability to reimagine universal themes in new and exciting ways.

However, I must also caution against the growing trend of “IP mining”—the recycling of well-loved stories for profit, often at the expense of creativity. It’s a practice that risks stifling the innovation that makes genres like portal fantasy so special.

Why Portal Fantasy Is the Best

Portal fantasy encapsulates the essence of what it means to be human. It allows us to explore other worlds while reflecting on our own. It’s not just about escapism—it’s about growth, self-discovery, and the hope that there’s something greater waiting for us.

Unlike high fantasy, which often feels distant, portal fantasy offers a sense of closeness to our reality. It gives us a taste of the unknown while keeping one foot firmly planted in the familiar.

My Dream

As a creator, I aspire to contribute to this incredible genre through audio and visual storytelling. I have many ideas for modern-day portal fantasy tales and can’t wait to share them with you.

Portal fantasy reminds us that the greatest adventures often begin with a single step into the unknown. Let’s take that step together.

Let me know what you think!
